Final Major Project- Proposal
Proposal
Synopsis: The story of a young man who volunteers to take part in a programme from a company called Engsai Pharmaceuticals. The programme offers lucky participants to the be the first to trial a series of new "Life Enhancing" medication, This medication offers several different perks and super powers including telekinesis, incineration and short distance teleportation otherwise known as blink. Daniel is keeping a video diary noting down his experiences as he gets more and more super powers, he starts off by being to control his camera with telekinesis, later he tests out the blink ability by going to the park and playing frisbee with himself. he later tries out incineration by setting a table outside as a test. Side effects soon begin to occur when Daniel wales up with holes in his shirt, a sign of incineration, side effects soon become severe to the point he eventually combusts.
Style: For my FMP visually I want this to look to look as realistic as possible so I am going to be filming this as a found footage piece with entirely handheld shots apart from one at the park which is Tri- podded shot where he is blinking across the park as a test. I also feel the handheld found footage effect will be useful as well because you'll be able to get closer to the main character Daniel as it'll be more personal experience.
Target Audience: For my FMP I believe my genre of film is going to be most suitable for a male audience of around 16 years to 27 years of age. My film fits into A science fiction feel because of the use of these superficial drugs which give extraordinary powers gives the movie this surreal feeling.
Logistics: For my final major project I believed that planning in advance is going to be crucial on whether or not this is going to work or not. With a heavy emphasis on visual effects, knowing your shots and all the other minor details are going to play a massive part so planning and test shooting is essential. Before main shooting I have made several advertisements that promoted the pharmaceutical company to give it more of an open world style and to give it an extended universe.
Additional Material: For my FMP I am planning to make a behind the scenes documentary for it, I feel this'll be good because this will show my thought process that goes into when I'm making a movie as this project is our fmp's this is something that should be a lot more personal and this should be the movie you should be doing a behind the scenes for. A behind the scenes for my type of movie is very viable and will be of great help as my movie will be using a lot of practical and visual effects in it and showing how I pulled off all of these effects will be good for a behind the scenes.

Colour Correction
This lesson involved the use of colour correction and some colour grading with the use of Adobe After Effects, we had 3 different videos that came with different issues which I'll go into later into this write up.
This is the first video is of two young girls at a park, on it's own it is a fine camera shot but it's not the best it could be. So first we put the video into After Effects and made a composition out of it The only tool we used when colour correcting was a tool called Colour Finesse which you could alter RGB WFV and other channels. Like I said the shot was not bad but it's a bit saturated and dark so I altered The pedestal, midtones and gain until the shot was much brighter and looked fuller, you can see the difference in the before and after picture.
The next video was an extreme closeup of a girl, as you can see the shot is a dark and it has a definite blue feel to it and that had to change, this time I took a lot of the blue out of the blue gain channel while adjusting the gain, pedestal and mid tones so that they would line up with up each other so that you would get the effect that is in the after picture.
In this video there is a tracking shot of a piece of paper and the overall shot has quite a distracting yellow tinge so that needed to be changed. The first thing I did was pull out the red gain which really helped and then i adjusted the graphs until the I got the result that you see in the second picture.

Idea Generation
In this Fridays session we began our first formal session on FMP (Final Major Project) one important part in FMP is the idea generation process, before we can get into post production, production or even pre production we must have an idea, generating a good and original idea is something that is hard to do however coming up with an idea that isn't necessarily original but adding your own twist or flair is something that is possible and could definitely be good.
We were given a few examples of tasks that could help during the idea generation process one of them was through the process of looking at an image and creating a story for example there was a picture of a family at a Christmas dinner and in groups we had to discuss potential character arcs and storylines that this family could've been involved in. For example in our group we established that the family was a group of psychopaths who had recently killed their parents for their inheritance money and one of the group is not as keen as the others in committing the act.
Another example of idea generation is to make a character using a character profile and then making a story out of the character you just made. So for example you could create an eccentric old man who has as an oddball personality, you may be able to place him in a drama piece but have him as a comedy relief character. Or have a character who is suffering from a terminal disease and wants to accomplish something before he or she dies. One of the important things for characters to have is to have a goal of some kind whether it be material or sentimental you want to be invested in this character and see him or her achieve this goal.
Below are a few concepts that I have come up with using my own idea generation processes none of these ideas are necessarily the final idea and these are just brief synopsis's as I whittle down the remaining ideas the stories will be expanded upon.

Three different people in three different locations experience a phenomenon in which they can see into each others minds.
A troubled teenager develops an extraordinary power but he would rather not use it.
3 friends 1 dead body a large sum of money.
A young man discovers he is going to die in a few days time and must decide what he wants to do wit his time left.
A guy in dead end job with no thrill in his life unknowingly befriends a serial killer.
A person begins receiving text messages with events that haven't happened yet.

Genre
This lesson was about genre and genre theory which is a smaller part of the theory structuralism. For one part we had to write down the iconography of a western movie. Then in pairs we had to make a poster for a made up movie without giving a hint as to what the genre is. below is the poster. We also had to make of list of every genre that we knew as a group
This is the poster for our movie "D.I" we decided to go as vague as possible for when it came to the making of it we decided that a human eye would be the best and give an acronym title. However when it came to group assessment, many guessed that it was a science fiction movie as the poster looks pretty similar to the trailer of the movie "A Requiem for a dream" Which I personally agreed with, also the colour which was a steel blue helped people assume it was a Sci-fi. However if you would just wash out the colours and change the title you could easily pass this poster off as a horror film.
We were asked a final question based on two different quotes which basically said whether or not the ideology of genre is a good or bad thing. Well I personally believe that genre is a good thing and is something we need to separate one from another. Without genre there wouldn't be a way to connect with audiences and I believe that it is not a barrier with the use of cross genres it makes experimentation possible

Pre-production (including sound)
This is the synopsis for our corporate video the Royal Hotel in Southend on Sea.
The video opens of shots around Southend before coming to establishing shots of the hotel itself. There are interior shots of the bar room itself, close ups of different areas before panning around the bar, there s a fade before showing an establishing shot of the Royal hotel at night and shots of an event that took place in the basement getting close ups of the DJ then the video cuts to the candle light event before finishing with contact information for the hotel.

Sound
Sound is very important in any production on any scale, considering the fact that one of the main selling points of our clients is many different music events they host sound is going to be crucial. We are going to be filming an event called "The Candle Light Event" which is on every Sunday at the Royal Hotel, the event is an open mic event where people go and perform for the evening, making sure this is recorded properly and and professionally is important. For our corporate video we used a Zoom H1 recorded which is a nice piece of equipment which will be the main recorder for all of our audio. It is a directional microphone which I have worked with before and it does record very crisp audio however there are some drawbacks with it, for once to get the most use of the Zoom you are going to have to keep it stationary as you would be able to hear noises such as you are moving it also you are going to have to keep it fairly close to the action otherwise it won't pick it up although if you just leave it in a solitary position you're not going to have much of an issue.Wednesday, 5 February 2014
Camera Projection
In this lesson we used After Effects to create a landscape made entirely of 2D layers however using 3D space we give the effect that this is all in the third dimension with the use of Camera Projection. We started off by opening up After effects and then importing the following layers into the software, we used PNG files which are different from other image files as they don't have any alpha channels. First we sized the image files so they would appear in scale from the foreground to the background. The next part was to make use of 3d space by making all the layers a 3d and by adjusting the Z axis we were able to push the layers back to give it some perspective and then re scale the layers to compensate for the adjustment.
The next part of the composition is to add in the 3D camera to make use and show off the 3D space you have created. By selecting the 3D camera you can change a lot of different settings on the camera. For this we chose a 35mm camera which will help when it comes to creating a depth of field. We then placed the point of interest to the back of the image this creates a parallax.
In the final portion of the lesson we had to key frame in the camera moves to give it a more professional look and feel. The camera moves up from behind the wall and arcs over and we can see the sand and the pyramids. This finished project makes it look like an actual camera was used when making the composition.
