Warp Stabilizer and Wiggle Lesson

For this lesson we were given the task of using two different types of motion tracking techniques to first make a video appear to have a handheld feel and in the second part of the lesson we had to smooth out a piece of footage with the use of the warp stabilizer.

The first piece of footage was one of a guy hitting a baseball and the effect that we want to achieve is to make it look like the guy is hitting the ball so hard the camera is shaking. After placing the footage into a new composition we have to establish the points in which the footage needs to shake and we did this using key frames. The next part is to add the shaking motion to the footage using the wiggle tool and by modifying the magnitude and frequency we get the shaking effect but there is a problem, the background is clearly visible and that needs to change but there is a fairly simple way to do this with the use of the motion tiles effect we are able to duplicate the original movie file and by using the mirror tile tool we have the final footage.

in the second part of the lesson we had to smooth out a piece of footage which was was slightly wobbly , With the use of warp stabiliser  tool. The warp stabiliser tool is very useful for giving a shot a tripod look however this can only be used when there is minor shaking there warp stabiliser will not be effective when there is a lot of shaking even hand tracking will not help when the shaking is  extreme.

After Effects Motion Tracking

For this lesson we had to create a composition which involved a lot of which we had learned in previous lessons but at a more advanced level. We had to motion track 3 castles onto a mov file to make it appear as if it were in the background we made use of both Adobe After Effects and Photoshop to achieve this. First we had to import the appropriate files into After Effects. First we turned the mov file into our composition this would be the plate for graphic effect. Then it was time for the motion tracking we had to split this two different motion tracks as the effect is quite long and because of the actor in the video is only in a certain portion of the screen. The next part involved Photoshop, the original image was a castle in a field. The first thing that had to be changed was the removal of the background followed by adding in grass by the use of the clone stamp tool, the grass was then feathered to make it blend in with the mov file.

Now the final part of this composition is to colour correct it after parenting the castles to the tracking points. This was to make the castles fit into the scene more clearly and this was done by pulling out the green and adding more of blue and red. For extra we had to take a mov file of moving clouds and the replace the existing sky with the mov and this is to give the finished product an overall look of professionalism.

Quentin Tarantino

Visual Style and Techniques

Trunk & Hood POV shot

Tarantino has used this in almost all of his movies that he has directed this shot involves a POV shot  of someone in the boot of the car as it is being opened.

The Use of black and white .
Black and White is used in some of Tarantino's movies because of how he liked the look of early cinema up to the way it was used in the French new wave era.

The mirror conversation

A lot of Tarantino characters have small monologues in front of a mirror in which they generally reflect what has happened to them.  Reservoir Dogs, Pulp Fiction, Jackie Brown

Sample Brief And Response

Below is an example of a brief for a potential client. This will show how the client and the person making the video will go back and forth on certain details until a final brief can be agreed upon.

Client: Grave Media Productions

Contact: Jonathan Stewart (Head Marketer) Jstewart87@gmail.com

Name of Project: Grave Media promotional video

Type of Project: Promotional

Requirements: The logo must be shown at all times during the video and will have Propane Nightmares by Pendulum to be the backing track. Footage from all 4 of our studios films must be present. short interviews with staff.  5 minute run time.

Audience: Potential customers and investors

Distribution: The video is to be on our website and our youtube page, we will also want to advertise this on youtube.

Response

Greetings I am looking forward to working on the project, below are a few things I consider that we could work on to better improve the overall project.

First and foremost could I please have the full resolution picture of the logo for obvious reasons for use in the actual video also if you could provide me clips from the movies I would more than appreciate that.

If you could give me a list of names and details for people that could be interviewed so that the process can go a smooth as possible and get the most out of it.

The only problem with the choice of the backing track is that it is a copyrighted track and you would have to acquire the rights to use the track if you can't do that then i'm afraid there isn't much we can do and we would have to use a royalty free soundtrack some I can provide now.

Lastly I feel that 5 minutes is a bit too long for the use of a promotional video I suggest that we cut it down to 3 minutes as I feel that it would flow a lot easier.

Stig Ident Summary

For this assignment we had to create an ident for Perry McCarthy who was formerly known as the stig. This ident was for his website as he is now most known for being a public speaker, the ident has to be no more than 5 seconds and has to show the stig in a positive light. There wasn't a written brief given to us instead Perry came down to the college and verbally gave us the details and what he wanted then we had a few weeks to come up with a concept, plan it out and then finally make the ident and Perry personally chose which one he would use for his website. Since we had no official contact with Perry we couldn't ask questions straight to him instead we would have ask our course leader Paul Cousins who would then relay them back to Perry so we had to use the third party for extra help.

Here is the final ident

College Brief

For this assignment we were given the task of creating a corporate video for a client that you have found yourself or one for the college if you cannot find a client or if there will be difficulties with the client you have chosen.

This video could be an informational video about the company, an instructional video for employees for instance a health and safety video or it could be a video promoting the company and the service/product it provides however this is down to the client and what you are expected to do will be in the brief. The deadline for this assignment is the week beginning the 10th of February 2014 which is only 6 weeks, this is to give the effect of an actual deadline for a client as they are very short.

We're going to need to research our potential client find out who they are and what they do so you can create a video that is accurate to what they want and possibly what other videos they have done so you have an idea of what to expect. You're going to need pre production not only for yourself so you know exactly what you are going to do but the client may also want to see your pre production so they know exactly what you are doing and know that their time and effort isn't going to waste. Finally the evaluation will come and we'll have come out with a lot to write about with this experience.

We should be able to finish this assignment and come out with the knowledge of how to contact and establish potential clients, how to deal with clients and working to a brief. This assignment will be very useful to us because this will give us an idea of what working with an actual client is like which will be very useful as a potential career or something that could be done for extra income.
